"A warning from the people of Farrer."

The article in last week's " The Saturday Paper" by Michelle Milthorpe, titled as above, demonstrates very strongly that although our Electoral system is probably the best in the world, it also demonstrates, the failings of the preferential voting system. Although Michelle finished a clear second to the eventual winner on first preferences, her 28.1 % was substantially better than the combined 22.2% of the so -called coalition. The fact that the eventual winner was a party of doubtful standing in the electorate with a miserely 39.5% should not breed any complacency with thinking voters. They apparently received huge sums of money from one of our wealthiest citizens, clearly demonstrating the extreme influence of capitalist ambitions to control our Parliament. At whatever cost?
The performance of Michelle Millthorpe as an independent, is heartening. Across the other side of the Murray, in the electorate of Indi, we have the ongoing success of Helen Haines, one of the most effective independents, of the few strong independents we now have in the parliament. Following are a couple of quotes from Michelle's article."That's what inspired me to become an independent. Not because I reject politics, but because I believe it works best when it is firmly grounded in the needs and interests of the people. Parties are becoming too focused on managing politics, and politics is now too often performative, designed for media cycles, social media clips and internal party audiences rather than trying to solve real problems for real people."
"Democracy works best when every candidate is subject to equal scrutiny and has equal opportunity to explain their ideas. That principle should not depend on party affiliation."
My only comment is,that politics is the antithesis of good government. We do not need Parties and politicians to run our Nation, we need Parliamentarians. Selected and voted in by their individual electorates, committed and determined to maintain integrity and decency, while always acting in the interest of the people. Never to respond to vested interests seeking only profit, regardless of the damage to our natural environment. In other words, better government.
