The article in this weeks "The Saturday Paper" by professor John Hewson a former leader of the Coalition, titled " The scourge of tribalism",is very honest. Basically he is referring to the poor state of politiocs in the USA.
But he starts off-and I quote " I am embarrassed to recall an early instruction I was given by a senior Liberal when I entered politics".
"It was that I should never see any good or merit in the people, policies and ideas of the other side. They were to be treated as the enemy"
We all know, that these sentiments were and are, those that apply to their opponents in our parliamentary system, the Labor Party.
He then goes on to say, and i quote "The strategy shouldn't be just to spout negativity about the other side, but to engage in a constructive process where the endgame is better government" It sounds like he could be a member of the movement for better government.
He subsequently goes on to say "Unfortunately much of this comes from the tribalism of the political contest, in which players simply repeat their dot- point lines and slogans against the other side, when ever possible. Party discipline is fundamental."
In this last quote particularly ,he is of course talking about the USA system. But it all applies to our Country as well.
Unfortunately, this is the state of affairs that has applied to Australia, almost since Federation, but certainly since the Second World war.
There is so much he says about the subject, but the bottom line is that were we Australia, governed by a parliament of independent members, we could remove all of those failings and save a huge amount of money. Become a member.
