The article by Senator Lidia Thorpe in this weeks "The Saturday Post" titled as above, is as expected , heart rending. The Senator is as always forthright, blunt and to be admired for her strength on any occassion, but needs to be reminded that her stance during the lead up to the" Voice to Parliament " referendum was ill advised.

Those of us who worked to bring about the installation of the "VOICE TO PARLIAMENT"

accepted that it was going to be a tough slog, but because it was going to be supposedly non political, it would be a job worth doing.

Once Peter Dutton and his so called co leader David Littleproud finally declared their intention to oppose the Voice, even though they had been the government during the previous five or six years while the "Uluru Statement" was being negotiated by the Indigenous persons appointed . During this period it was believed that the government were allowing non -partisan proceedings to take place.

Only after the new government were installed and the Prime Minister declared there would be a Referendum on the matter, did the co -alition start to agitate that it would be party political.

It was then that the bigoted racists that are the opposition, assumed the NO campaign.

While Senator Thorpe had some valid criticism of the Voice campaign, it very quickly became clear that her comments and reasons were deleterious to the support of the yes campaign and played into the hands of the NO campaign.

From the start of the campaign,it was clear that the Voice to Parliament step was likely to be more readily accepted by the populous, with the next campaign to bring about Makarrata , Truth and Treaty to follow. Unfortunately with the final result of the referendum it was clear that the government was going to have to be more circumspect.

The Senators criticism of the current governments apparent silence on the matter is really unfair. Our current political , two party system is the problem. While ever we ,the nation, continue to accept this system we will always have a parliament of contretemps with adversarial activities the norm. A parliament operating with independent MP.s selected by the electorates and answerable to their individual electorate, having signed a declaration of integrity, honesty and no acceptance of any funds from vested interests will eventually produce good governmemt. In addition the cost of running Parliament and government will be halved saving the Nation $billions.
