The Article in last week's "The Saturday Paper" titled "Secret briefings on climate national security risk" by Karen Barlow is not only informative, but disturbing. Senator David Pocock and progressive independents in the house, say it is "recklessly negligent." The Saturday Paper" reveals "that on December 9, a non-sitting day of parliament, the crossbenchers dialled in to a secure a meeting to be briefed on the Office of National Intelligence's(ONI) long-awaited Climate Risk Assessment report. The report was delivered to the government in early 2023.
The Coalition and the Greens were not briefed, nor was the usually bipartisan Joint Parliamentary Committee on Intelligence and Security.
The nub of this blog, is that not only did the government have no right to contain this report for a period of about two years in secrecy, but then only released it to a select group of parliamentarians, who were effectively gagged. The fact is that it is only now, that we the people learn about this very important report. We the nation, should have been informed about it a long time ago. Apparently, Senator David Pocock describes it as "frankly terrifying" and I would accept his opinion over that of any party politician. This is just another example of our two-party system's attitude toward freedom of information. They are so averse to transparency, that it verges on criminality.
Particularly when it comes to issues of common interest or benefit. With a parliament of members, individually nominated and voted for by their electorates, answerable to each of their membership as well as the nation, sworn to the highest standards of integrity, honesty and decency, we will become a nation of TRUE democracy.. and totally non-corrupt.
