The article, titled above by Professor John Hewson, in a recent edition of "The Saturday Paper", is essential reading for all Australians.
He points out succinctly how Australia's version of Donald Trump ie. Peter Dutton, is wheeling out the biggest load of crap ever on the subject of Nuclear Energy for our power generation.
Dutton refers consistently and quotes the cheapness of electricity in the Ontario province of Canada. To quote Professor Hewson "He ignores the fact that the domestic supplier, Ontario Power Generation, is effectively a basket case, with a very sorry financial history" The Professor continues " In 1998, seven of public utility, Ontario Hydro's nuclear reactors were unexpectedly forced to shut down due to safety concerns. All of these reactors were inoperable for more than five years- two were still inactive as late as 2017, according to the Ontario Clean Air Alliance." " By the following year, Ontario Hydro was effectively bankrupt, and split into five companies"
"Ontario Power Generation (OPG's) electricity prices rose about 60% between 2002 and 2016 in order to pay for nuclear power, including restarting the five reactors that had been shut down." "In September 2016, OPG told the Ontario Energy Board it needed to increase its nuclear power prices by more than 10% a year for the next decade" And so the story goes. But wait there's more?
"But the basic question that never seems to be asked, is whether the electricity sector is being run in the interest of electricity consumers or the nuclear industry ? This needs to be asked in the Australian context, in relation to Duttons persistance with his nuclear option, against the massive and still mounting global evidence of its cost and time delay disadvantages.
The fact that he and his pal Ted O'Brien have had the temerity to challenge the authority of our CSIRO and their GenCost report on these cost disadvantages, when a USA study suggested the GenCost estimates were conservative, putting their estimates at $12,351 a kilowatt against our GenCost's $8,446/ kw.
With all of the evidence put forward in this article by Professor Hewson, one can only come to the conclusion that the opposition leader is playing his usual political games, trying to distract and interrupt the Albanese government's necessary focus on the renewables transition. In other words, bugger the future needs of our nation.
