Government Subsidies.

An article in "The Canberra Times" yesterday, points out that our governments will in this financial year, pay out subsidies to the fossil fuel producers as much as $14.5 billion dollars.

The Australia Institute reveals they expect these subsidies to be a 31 per cent increase in the current fiscal year from $11.1 billion paid out in 2022/23. Apparently the government operates a Fuel tax credits scheme which has been applicable since July 1,2006 for business consumption in various forms.

Despite the coming advent of Climate Change these subsidies are still being paid without concern for their effect upon carbon emissions and climate policy. It needs to be remembered that we the average taxpayer,do not benefit from any such subsidies. Additionaly businesses can claim all such expenses as tax deductable. One question that should be asked is why ,or what reason, was such a fuel tax credit scheme instituted. Whatever the reason,is it still justifiable.?

The Australian Institute report states that fossil fuel subsidies, over the next four years

will total $65 billion. Is it possible that what ever reason justified the institution of such subsidies in 2006 has long been forgotten. Possibly it suits the two party system in looking after their vested interrest friends. Is this another example of how the nation would benefit with a parliament ( senate and repressentatives) peopled with independents ,supported by and answerable to their electorates, would be at all times, aware of such issues.
